If you’ve researched Croatia, then you know we’ve got a long history. Complicated, but long. Modern day witnesses to this tale are the castles in Zagorje region. Each tells a piece of the puzzle and offers plenty to photograph and explore. This story is part of our day tours from Zagreb.
Beginning at Novi Dvori castle, the story unfolds with one of Croatia’s most famous rulers, Ban Josip Jelačić (the statute of him on a horse adorns the main square in Zagreb). The rebuilt castle, tomb and chapel, together with additional buildings show us how this ruler arranged his home.
Moving on to Trakošćan castle, a gem from the Medieval era, we’ll explore a fully rebuilt building from the 13th century perched atop a hill. The museum within illustrates the way of life, while the lake beneath offers a glimpse into how the owners relaxed.
By this time we will work up an appetite and stop by Grešne gorice restaurant. After you’ve had your fill of local gastronomy, a small farm animal zoo is right next door, together with a wineyard.
Just down the road is the Veliki Tabor castle, where you can listen to the sad but gripping tale of Veronika Desinić. The oldest tower dates from the 12th century, while its round pillars cast interesting shadows to photograph.
After a short drive, we will arrive to Oršić castle, built more for pleasure than protection. It houses the Museum of peasant revolts and boasts a decorative garden. In the adjoining park is a monument to the Peasant revolt of 1573.
